Geothermal Heat Exchanger Performance Evaluations

Fluidaptic, LLC is exploring the efficiency and performance of geothermal heat exchangers for use with geothermal heat pumps. The goal of this project is to assess the thermal performance and overall feasibility of geothermal heat exchangers that have lower installation costs vs. conventional geothermal heat exchangers. The project will involve analysis (e.g., simulation) of heat exchangers under various conditions and comparison with traditional heat exchangers. Learners will apply their knowledge of heat transfer, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and energy systems to evaluate the potential benefits and limitations of these geothermal heat exchangers. The outcome will help Fluidaptic, LLC make informed decisions about future product development and market strategies.

Optimization of Insulator to Reduce Thermal Interference in Geothermal Loop

Evaluate insulator between legs of a geothermal heat exchanger loop. The heat exchanger tubes may or may not have a helical configuration, may be installed in a blind hole or pulled through a hole (e.g., made by horizontal drill). Possible benefits include: reduced thermal conduction between tubes; economic savings that pay back the cost of the thermal barrier and its installation; a more effective heat exchanger my have less length (saving cost and labor); and/or a more effective heat exchanger may have a reduced volume of installation field.
